Marita, 2012

The sitter for Postcard from Cyprus was so pleased with his gift that, a few years later he decided to commission a companion piece as a gift for his wife.

Once again, the painting was to be a surprise. I was invited to dinner with the couple while they were in Cyprus and tried to absorb as much detail of the sitter’s face in the dim light of the restaurant. It was barely sufficient, and the experience was a lesson to me to never do the same again.

As with Postcard from Cyprus, I was to depict memorable moments or events in the lady’s life and was sent photographs of a fjord in Norway, Victoria Falls, a safari in Africa and a evening by a camp fireside. These I painted in the background, behind the main portrait which dominates the centre of the canvas.

Acrylic on canvas, 80 x 80 cm.

The painting is in Germany.

Portrait of dark-haired, blue-eyed lady. The portrait features her head, and a red scarf around her neck. Behind the head are images of treasured moments in her life: an African safari, Victoria Falls, a campsite fire and a fjord in Norway.

Behind the head are images of treasured memories of Victoria Falls, an African safari, a camp fireside and a Norwegian fjord.
