Mallow Heart, 2013

In 2013 I went to Maui in Hawaii on a family visit. My artist’s heart immediately fell in love with the frangipani there. They grew with such abandon and exuberance, that I came away with a burning desire to paint them.

As luck would have it, on my return I was commissioned to paint something in the style of Georgia O’Keefe. I decided that the frangipani flower was too simple for that purpose and settled on the more complex Mallow flower. I used a close-up photograph flower as the source for this painting. I liked the sinuousness of the petals.

I worked in oil, and built the painting up in layers, allowing each layer to dry sufficiently to allow the paints to stay vibrant and clean.

Oil on canvas, 80 x 80 cm.

The painting is in Cyprus

Prints of this painting can be purchased. Various qualities and sizes available. Limited Edition of Giclee prints.

Close up of the heart of a mallow flower in tones of pink, purple, red, orange and yellow. Sinous petals wrap themselves around each other and occupy the entire picture plane. A bold yellow stamen rises strongly from it nest among the petals.
