Tribute to Rothko, 2021

The commission was to create a large, red painting, by way of tribute to Mark Rothko, whose work the client had seen and admired in the Tate Modern in London.

Rothko has long been an artist whose work has informed my work in the past (see my Abstract works), so I welcomed this opportunity to revisit him.  For all the apparent simplicity of the image, achieving the effect I wanted took many layers. The client was keen to have the painting, so he received it as is. I would have preferred longer to work on it further. Acrylic on canvas, 100 x 120 cm.

The painting before being rolled and shipped to Cyprus, where it has been stretched onto a wooden stretcher
